Department:            Development

Classification:          Fulltime, Exempt

Supervisor:               Executive Director

Position Summary

Under the direction of the Executive Director, the Director of Development is responsible for managing and implementing the Company’s fundraising plan. The Director of Development must have a solid understanding of grant writing, donor relations, special events, marketing, social media and data management. They must also have strong communication, organization and interpersonal skills to work effectively with staff, the Board of Directors and outside agencies.

 

Essential Position Responsibilities

  • Fundraising
    • Lead the Company’s efforts to obtain financial and other support in collaboration with the Executive Director and the Fundraising Committee of the Board of Directors.
    • Research funding opportunities that match the Company’s strategic goals.
    • Develop and maintain working relationships with funders.
    • Collaborate with co-workers to gather information and write grant proposals for government, corporate and foundation funds.
    • Prepare and submit applications for funding along with all required attachments and supporting documentation.
    • Fulfill reporting requirements on or before deadlines.
    • Oversee donor and grantor relationships to ensure that all gifts and grants are acknowledged according to Company policy and industry best practices.
  • Special Events
    • Organize and lead special events appropriate to the Company’s image and purpose such as the annual sponsorship event and ground breaking/grand opening ceremonies for new housing developments.
    • Identify and evaluate the products and pricing offered by vendors and independent contractors (ICs). Negotiate with and select vendors and ICs and oversee their performance and work product.
  • Data Management
    • Oversee the donor/contact database ensuring accuracy, currency and utility of information.
    • On an as needed basis, evaluate options to upgrade existing database and/or switch to a different online fundraising platform.
  • Marketing / Branding / Communications / Social Media
    • Manage the overall promotional functions to market an appropriate brand/image for the Company.
    • Prepare and distribute media releases and ensure that materials for media kits are timely and accurate.
    • Collaborate with staff and vendors to update the Company’s website.
    • Create content for and contract with Graphic Designer and Printer to produce all materials necessary for the success of the fundraising and donor community efforts described above.
    • Write, coordinate and produce periodic newsletters.
    • Produce and distribute an annual report as needed.

 

Other Duties

  • Staff the Fundraising Committee of the Board of Directors and participate in meetings of the Board of Directors (as needed).
  • Participate as a member of the senior management team to implement strategies and work plans to meet the Company’s short- and long-term objectives.
  • Participate in the Company’s strategic planning process.
  • Assist with other projects and duties as needed.

 

Skills

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to lead diverse groups of people and vendors to run events
  • Strong interpersonal skills
  • Proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel and database management is required
  • CFRE Certification is preferred
  • Proficiency in WordPress is preferred

 

Education and Experience

Requires bachelor’s degree with five years of related experience

 

Supervisory Responsibilities

None

 

Physical Requirements

This position requires daily use of office equipment.  May need to lift up to 10 pounds.

 

Work Environment

The essential responsibilities of this position are performed in a busy indoor office environment and the employee must be able to keep focused in an environment with interruptions and distractions.  Other responsibilities, such as special events, will require work to be completed outdoors including on construction job sites.

 

Travel Requirements

Infrequent travel outside of Los Angeles County by car or airplane for trainings, meetings and conferences.  Must have and maintain a valid driver’s license and insurance as required by law.
